Creating a Unique Name Badge from Polymer Clay

I wanted to design a name badge for work that is attractive as well as functional.

Form + Function

I love a rustic look so needed it to look attractive but a ‘little rough’ on purpose. The role is not in a corporate setting and I wanted to reflect this in its fun style.

I needed to be able to attach a pen, penknife, and a place to put my glasses. This is the end result.

Process

  1. Designed the letters using an extruder (snakes) and shaped the letters into something with a little character (not perfectly shaped)
  2. Added a textured backing for the letters – baked in the oven
  3. Cleaned the result and added the next layer – baked in the oven
  4. Hammered aluminim wire into a shape that the ‘hooks’ would suit their different purposes
  5. In the final layer, I added a bought badge pin and textured the back – baked in the oven
  6. Metallic wax and pan pastels were applied to highlight and contrast the lettering

December – Christmas Inspired

During the month of December, I was inspired by the season to design work using the Christmas colours of red and white.

I usually don’t use white clay by itself as it is hard to keep clean and clear. I do have a dedicated pasta machine just for white clay. This definitely helps reduce cross contamination.

The images below are the result of my creating.

My favourites are the dangles with dots and spots that came to me in a dream and the pendant as it has an experimental back made using a deep texture from Helen Breil Designs.

Enjoy 😁.

Latest Work: Silver Jewellery

The work above has been created using traditional silversmithing techniques and modern materials such as silver clay. The leaf ring has been created using a leaf texture mould from a sage leaf from the garden. The leaf pendant is both silver clay and sterling silver sheet with a patina for effect and colour. Both have been textured.

The round earrings are textured and then domed. The wires were heated to form balls that are part of the design.

Both the pearl and the sea-glass marble have been wire-wrapped.

Leaves

I love leaves – I particularly love the diversity of gum leaves. That may sound strange but I am referring to the stages that a gum leaf goes through when it ages- the changes in colours and the way they disintegrate over time.

My next 100daysof series will focus on #leaves.

Where we live there are many large gum trees. See the images below for some of my work featuring gum leaves.

This first piece is an early design – a sterling silver pendant, textured and in the shape of a leaf.

Circles and dots …

I have been playing with ways to create dots and circles. The following images are some examples of these experiments.

Some of the ways I have created these dots and circles are by:

  • adhering the polymer clay to the surface (glass) and cutting out the circles carefully – not moving the base layer
  • part baking the base layer so that there is little distortion to the layer
  • adding dots with souffle pens and then baking to set
  • careful application cutting out and replacing – raw clay to raw clay
  • playing with textures and adding circles over circles – offsetting the circles
  • drilling holes and using/creating textures that leave circles and dots

All have appeal to me and I am ready to apply to some feature pieces in the near future.

Garden and Home: Creativity in the Home

Staying at home in 2020 has led to a focus on home improvement and a resurgence on home renovation and gardening.

When I decided to take some time away from working in schools, one of the first things I did was improve our garden. I established a kitchen garden and we now have garden beds for vegetables and herbs. I also wished to make the space more wildlife friendly with the aim to attract birds, butterflies and bees.

Recently, I have been working on the personal touches, adding some creative elements that personalise and make a house a home. I wished to put my creativity into the space – and to reuse and upcycle as much as possible.

Welcome Sign

Designed with the motif of gum leaves. The main medium used is polymer clay with mica powders and textures. See this sign in progress on my instagram post.

Kookaburra Wall Hanging

This sculptural piece was designed using polymer clay on an existing wooden hanging.

It unfortunately had a mirror that had broken when the leather strap it was suspended from broke. I decided to cover up the mirror with ‘something’ using the medium of polymer clay. I wanted it to be rustic and decided to use a palette that included bronze and silver.

The border is made from layered textured strips and the kookaburra created using a palette knife style application to give the feeling of feathers.

The result is a stylised kookaburra and with the ubiquitous gum leaves found in our decor.

Next projects … to come

  • Garden ornaments – ladybirds, a cat and herb markers
  • Tile Mosaics: memorial stepping stones
